It’s a new week, a new plan, and I’m bringing the kids along for the ride, but first I had to get out the trusty laminator!
Over the weekend I implemented the idea with the kids that they could choose how they wanted their upcoming week planned. This is about me letting go of total control and allowing the kids to take more ownership of their day to day living. I got a few surprises actually.
One of my children actually preferred to have two days off from doing anything, she has decided that Monday and Sunday are her ‘nothing’ days, and she’s filled up the other days accordingly. I’ve kept the structure manageable with there only 2 options for 2 things before school, and only one space for after school each day. Another surprise I got was actually how similar the boys in this house think. Without exception my two younger boys picked the same days for the same activities, and actually my oldest boy had almost exactly the same too, it was just he was fitting more into the week cause he has more after school activities.
So, this morning, before the jobs started I took their pieces of paper, each labelled with the child’s name and I laminated them, making them, almost, indestructible, and making them look important. Kids put a lot of emphasis these days into how things look. Laminating is a quick way to get buy in to new ideas in this house. If it’s laminated it’s real.
Who knows yet how well the planner will actually work, today is Day 1, but just as an exercise and an insight into how they think, I would say the whole exercise has been successful. And the fact that with the laminator they can tick things off themselves, Day 1 of New Plan – (tick).
