It’s the beginning of the school term. In my house that means that there is a real potential to go a bit over-the-top crazy. Just in the last two days we have had 7 swimming lessons, 1 jazz practice, 1 ballet practice, and 1 karate training, plus the rest of the week looks just as crazy. School timetables, clashing with beginning of term return to sports practices, could mean a serious case of overwhelm,
Here are 3 tips to Calm the Rush:
Try and be present. It is very easy to predict how hard the day is going to be, how stressful the sports practices are going to make you feel, how you just don’t know how it is going to fit in. We build ourselves up for failure. When you feel yourself going into this ‘predicting the future’ state of mind, take three deep breaths and just pull yourself back to where you are in the present.
Write a wee list for the day (or type one into your phone). Not your massive to-do list that never goes away, but a wee reminder list of what is needed that day. This will help keep you grounded. And then tick the points off as you get to the tasks, or as you get each child to their practice.
Take a drink bottle and something to snack on for you. Throw an apple in your bag or grab a container of dried fruit or nuts. We often forget to fuel ourselves when we are running after our kids. You will feel calmer, and more in control, if you have remembered something to eat and drink for yourself.
Good luck out there today.
