Yes it is still November, but the request for Christmas carols is already loud and clear in my house. The kids notice the ‘baubles’ and ‘Santa Claus’ flags adorning the light poles as we drive to school in the morning. The Christmas lists are written (not that I’m reading them yet – they’ll change I’m sure) and the kids are hyping up.
Christmas is coming!
So … how are you going to parent your children through the upcoming ‘Early Christmas’ craziness?
- Invest in some DVD’s (or bring out some you haven’t seen in a while) – KEEP THE KIDS AWAY FROM THE TV and therefore AWAY FROM THE ADVERTISING! Ads are a killer for parents – cause they always make the toys look way cooler and more exciting than they will ever be in real life. Plus keeping the TV off, will ensure you don’t get a wish list that is 100 toys long!
- Don’t get too carried away if the wish list gets too expensive or too expansive … do some thinking now, about the next stage your child is heading into and what they would really, really like and get value out of. If you do your thinking and note taking – there are fantastic apps available to keep this in one place (I use “Out of Milk” for a basic list maker) – NOW, you will find that you get way more clear and calm about what you need and what your children want – before it becomes URGENT.
- Enjoy it!! Yes it does seem to start earlier and earlier every year – but it’s a happy time, and a time where your children make happy memories. You will be a much happier parent if your buy in a little to the hype and excitement.
Driving in my car is all about Christmas Carols now – so it’ll be a long month if I don’t get into the spirit and sing-a-long.
