The kids have their favourite carols that we play almost constantly in the car, and I’m completely fine with that, and love singing along with them. The original Hi5 Christmas carols have done our family well. We have played these 2 CD’s now for 7 or 8 years, and they are a mix of traditional songs sung in a modern way, as well as new songs that suit us living in the Southern Hemisphere during the celebratory season.
But this morning I wanted something different – the more moderate, calming tones of the chapel-like singing of Christmas carols had a really uplifting effect on my mood. It took me back to my childhood, to singing in church at this time of year without the boppy and over-produced sounds of today.
It also made me think of my favourite carols – and to this day it is still the Charterhouse Carol, that I sung while I was at boarding school. We had harmonies, melodies, changes of tempo depending on the verse, and the story weaved through it.
Would love to hear if you have memories associated with a particular carol…
