Over the sibling rivalry?
Not able to be patient, caring, or forgiving of yourself?
This is how I am feeling this morning – and my kids aren’t even being naughty, aren’t bothering me and the fighting is pretty minimal. So what is my problem?
I’m having an OFF-DAY. The thing is that I have spent years and years, refereeing playtime between my kids, insisting that they all get along, and putting in place hours and hours of rules around sharing, appropriate playing etiquette and how they speak to each other. And I am still having an off day.
So if that’s me, I can imagine that you too have these sorts of days where we are just off.
So – what do we do?
My 3 Top Tips for Rejuvenating and plugging back in to the Mum I want to be:
- Boil the jug for a hot drink – be it tea, coffee, milo, drinking chocolate, or water with a slice of lemon. Whatever your drink is in the mornings find the space to sit down and enjoy it. Actually think about how this was exactly what you needed right at that moment, and ENJOY it!
- Keep your negativity to yourself – there’s nothing really wrong, you’re just a bit off, and it probably doesn’t mean that the world is out-to-get-you or that your children-are-out-to-get-you. It is easy to wallow in this feeling of ‘being down’ though, and our language reflects this – sometimes ringing that girlfriend for a ‘bitch’ session is NOT going to help – by talking about negative stuff often keeps you longer in that space of negativity even if on the surface it seems to help.
- Take the time over the next hour to notice 3 Happy/ Grateful/ Uplifting moments that occur for you, or in interactions with your kids. The first one could be that you are GRATEFUL for the space to even enjoy your cup of coffee…!
Be easy on yourself if you are having an OFF-DAY – it isn’t the end of the world, and it doesn’t mean that you are a bad parent. Give the negative thinking the minimal thought that it deserves and move on.
