It’s absolutely amazing how this happens. We are a parent – plain and simple – our expertise lie in management, or accounting, hospitality or admin …. whatever …. but suddenly we find ourselves in charge of something that we actually have NO IDEA of how to do.
Case in point – I am now a Soccer coach for my son’s U12 Soccer Team – now yes, I’m a trained teacher. I have taught soccer skills in Physical Education while I was working. I had lesson plans, and I ran a programme for about 100 kids – with support from my senior teacher who was a gun player and supports Newcastle – and we made it through a 3-4 week programme. Of course all of this was 11-14 years ago.
The talking to the kids and being in charge I’m fine with – my happy place in fact – but the skills part, I think I may have to referee games every Sunday, and also run 2 practices a week …. it’s almost funny.
But what are we going to do – this happens everywhere. There are never enough experts around to support our kids in all the endeavours that they are a part of – maybe it’s not as a coach, but you’ll probably find yourself the manager of your kids team, or on the committee that does the fundraising or the treasurer who helps with the books.
NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. And, it’s the bit that no-one tells you about.
Get your kids into sport – absolutely.
Try out a few things for fun – go for gold.
I’ll do the car pool week about with another family – not a problem.
But when the kids look at you, and the pressures start mounting, and the first game is a week away, and actually you COULD do it, maybe, with help, you’re sort of available……… and no one else is stepping into the role.
What are you going to do? Say YES of course – and then do a crash course on coaching Soccer online – what would we do without Google.
Enjoy the week ahead …. look for the amusing even when it seems crazy the things that we find ourselves getting into just because we’re the mum.
