It is definitely the first day of the new school term and my kids are up EARLY!
At 5.30am there are trotting footsteps heard through the house. At 5.45am some of the footsteps are making there way down the hall to me to have a quick cuddle – nervousness for the day ahead showing. At 6am, lights start going on, and the talking starts only minutes after that….
My kids are excited to see their friends, and also nervous. They are recovered from the last term and raring to go, but also hesitant, wanting to stay home where it’s comfortable.
My plan this morning is to take my time with the school drop-off, I haven’t made definite plans to be anywhere. I am planning on briefly poking my head in each of my kids classrooms and have a quick “Hello” with their teachers. Just to show my face, just to check in that my kids are starting the day the right way.
One of my kids is starting with a new teacher, although she did do some teaching in the class last term, it’s now going to be a bit different at the beginning of the day, so I’ll probably touch base on that class every morning this week.
Check for signs of anxiety in your kids this week, and move to alleviate them quickly, be present, be available, and it will quickly get back to normal.
The biggest problem we have as parents, is that we too have been disrupted by the school holidays and are raring to go again now the term has started. My biggest observation is that we should ease in to work again too, mentally holding back until our kids are settled again at school, and then in week 2 be firing ….
There is never any advantage to rushing when the kids are dragging their feet, we only end up with arguments and tears ….
Wishing you all a smooth start back to school this morning xx
