Unless you are actually tripping around to a completely different location, beaches, shopping, family catch-ups etc then the word ‘holiday’ is deceptive.
I can’t just take a complete holiday from my life, just because the kids are on holiday, although there were definitely times last week when I tried. Less writing, more coffee, no exercise, lack of motivation. And this happens to me every school holiday. The only one where I really should allow a ‘holiday’ is the Christmas holidays when I actually go away and visit my family and play at the beach.
These school holidays are wintry and hubby is still working, so it always annoys me that I just stop doing anything productive over this time period. Yes, the kids are at home, and yes I have 4 kids, so I can’t just camp out in my office and expect the house to still be standing and everyone to still be alive at the end of it without some interference and presence.
So this morning I got up, as if it was a normal school day. I exercised, 45 mins high intensity interval training and 20 minutes of yoga, I ate breakfast at the table with all the kids – I still think it was crazy that they were all awake before 6am – and showered and got organized before 7am. Normally this routine comes back into play on the first day of the term and is slightly stressful as kids and adults alike try and find uniform, books, lunch boxes and anything else deemed crucial for Day 1.
This morning it’s quite relaxed – I’ve done exercise, I’m organised, I’m about to hit the grocery shop sans kids at 8am after negotiating an extra 30 minutes of hubby at home before work so I could (supermarkets open at 8am down here in the middle of nowhere FYI). Things are tracking nicely, and I still have time to do ‘nothing’ later in the day …. But without the guilt or frustration of having not done anything all morning.
And the best thing about me being up, happy and organised? The kids are happy, stress-less and not fighting either. Yes, there is still time for that later too, but they’ve been up for almost 2 hours so things are pretty good!
So, my Monday pondering for you today is this – what have you taken a ‘holiday’ from just because it’s the school holidays? And should you have?
PS – I have coaching places available now for August if you want to get in touch and really get to know your child, and help your child move thorough the last 6 months of the year happy and achieving –
