I’m thinking about ‘Personality’ this morning.
Not that it should be a surprise, it’s just that the last week has been extremely busy with family, with kids events, with a lot of driving, and I’ve just been getting by with the parenting thing.
I don’t bash myself over the head with it though, because now that this week is looking like it’s back to routine, I have the time to tune back in to the personalities in my home. I find it amazing actually how quickly one of my children took advantage of the looser rules in the house, and has woken this morning absolutely convinced that none of the rules that have been consistently in his life since he was born, are relevant to him anymore.
He bores easily from rules, and is taking a lot of strides into a rule-free life over the last week. Unfortunately for him, I’m back on track this week, and I will have to exercise some patience and bring things back into line.
I can’t even get angry about the change in behaviour that he is exhibiting, because it is so typical of his personality preference, and I am absolutely fascinated by how quickly his mind works, and how quickly he turns his whole world into his preference. Another child with a different temperament, may make a few changes, but probably not go ‘all in’ like my son has.
He is given opportunity to be his cheeky, non-rule following self, and it’s important that I don’t dull his brightness, his personality spark, however getting ready for school, getting dressed for school, making lunch for school are all pretty basic rules that I think we can get back to being part of the morning expectations.
Amusing aside- he has just come into my room to inform me that he has finished his jobs. I have asked him about his teeth, and if he has brushed them. His response was beautifully typical, “Are you going to check on me?” – “Absolutely- I love checking” – he stomps down the hallway with a huge sigh.
