Either moving house, changing schools, moving countries, or simply adding to your family… These are all big family changes that can be wonderful, or needed, but we can forget to prepare our kids in the way that they need.
Big changes don’t need to affect kids negatively, and this process doesn’t need to stress out the kids or the parents. If we know our kids personality then we can know how to prepare our kids – it’s easy.
Changing schools can be a scary thing, maybe things haven’t been working at one school, and change is needed, or maybe your child is about to take the step up to Intermediate, or College.
If you have an introverted child, who finds a lot of stimulation overwhelming, and energy draining, or you have a judging child who likes rules and routines but stresses over change, and upheaval, then you can assume that there will be anxiety and issues around moving schools. With both of these situations, spending some time in the new school without anyone else around can help a lot. Take a walk around over the weekend, or after school has finished, and play in the playground, and look through the windows and look at how the classrooms are. Take some time to orientate your child to where the toilets are, where the offices are, and anything else significant to the school – like the hall or the gym. This little non-stressful option can eleviate stress in your child if moving schools is on your agenda.
If you are pregnant and expecting a change in your family there is also an opportunity for stress and anxiety in your older children. If you have a feeling child, then they may feel less loved, or less noticed, so it is important with this child to almost bend over backwards with positivity and love. If they are secure and happy, then this transition can be smooth and you can set up the future relationship between the siblings in a really positive way.
There are many ways where knowing your child’s personality can help you navigate change, and lessen stress. It’s a key point, and so worth spending time figuring out.
