Birthdays come around with regularity, every year in fact. And with 6 in our family, we end up with celebrations seemingly every month, or it feels like it.
It’s my oldest son’s birthday today, and it’s amazing that it’s been 12 years since he was born. It’s good that he’s getting older. The presents are changing, the expectations become different as he gets older, and it’s fun.
Of course, it’s also just another day. Still a school day, still with after school activities, still busy times in our family.
Birthday traditions are important though, so even though it’s still a normal day, and he’s getting older – there are still balloons, still a breakfast birthday cake, still a crazy early start to the day and presents before 6am. We will still have dinner together and have his favourites on the menu, and juggle some of the after school activities for something extra and fun.
And for a few moments this morning, some time for reflection for me.
