School is back today, and I really hope it all went well for you getting the kids up and dressed, and ready. Breakfast, lunch boxes, drink bottles, sun hats, books, devices, and everything else needed on the first day back.
One thing that is hard to get back into is ‘routine’, but it is one of the most important things to have a battle about early on if it’s a struggle. It’s the last term of the year, and the kids are tired, they are dreaming about Christmas already, and they are a bit nervous as well.
The nerves may look like:
- sore tummies
- and other things too…
If you find your child acting out, or being more subdued, or struggling this week then stop and have a conversation. Put some effort into setting up the morning routine. Kids can feel more secure and comforted by set rules in the morning, so they don’t have to think or worry about the day ahead. Letting them sleep in longer isn’t going to help with nerves because it often means that once they are finally up, there is a lot of stress and rush to get them out the door to school.
Whatever your routine is, make sure that it works for you and your family. Ask yourself things like:
- Do I want my kids dressed for school before breakfast?
- is there going to be a set place for school bags, and lunch boxes at the end of the day?
- do we have any reading, homework, practices, training that we need to find time for in the morning?
- do I want my child to do some basic jobs in the morning? Like making beds or tidying bedrooms?
Once you have figured out what’s important to you – then a simple tick sheet, or a reminder note for you, is a good way to start setting up a routine. I use an excell doc, and print out a new one daily, because I found that with 4 kids there were different needs on each day and for each child. Things like needing PE gear, or needing devices, was different for each child.
Kids are also excited to be back in school, and sometimes they can build it up too much for them to cope. It isn’t unusual to have tears in the first couple of days back at school as they settle down.
I need to sign off and set up the Monday morning list, it doesn’t take much and it makes my morning routine go much smoother.
Good luck out there today.
