Most people would be thinking that with 2 days to go of school for the term, and the Easter holidays, that relaxing would be an understandable thing to do.
But not in this house.
And this is for a very simple reason.
My kids are basically taking the piss out of me this week, with their entitlement, and their laziness, AND this would be a very bad way to head into the school holidays.
My kids making (attempting to make) their beds is a standard thing in my house.
My kids tidying up after themselves when they have finished something is standard in my house.
However, after I had dropped the kids at school yesterday morning and then gone back home, it was very obvious that everyone was just a bit too relaxed. Mess everywhere, and nothing tidied, and nothing cleaned. I was seriously NOT impressed.
But here’s the thing – it’s been pretty simple to turn around this morning.
- A written out list of the mornings jobs that they have to initial when they have done each job
- A time limit with consequences to create some urgency (they get an hour)
- After everything is done before 7.30am THEN they will get some free time to do or play or read or create or sing and dance … whatever they want before we leave for school around 8.15am
Doing it this way – means that I don’t turn into a raving lunatic in these last couple of days. I’m not angry. I’m not nagging. I’m not gritting my teeth. AND I’M NOT doing any of it myself.
Sometimes it does make sense to relax and give your kids a bit of a break, but other times it’s important to pull everything back into line, and get them to step up!
You can ABSOLUTELY be the parent that you want to be!
