Two days until my youngest turns 8 years old.
It’s a cool feeling.
This is truly when we are leaving the last of the baby years, the toddler years and the preschool years behind.
Something very cool starts to happen from 8 years. It’s the beginning of the next shift in personality, in the way our kids are developing the way they think, how they learn, how they make decisions, and really start to push more of their individuality onto the world.
We may have seen glimpses of it before, but from now on its a freight train.
It’s personality, it’s humour, it’s their energy, and it’s really fun.
With boys it’s also about the next surge of testosterone, and it can be a challenge to get it all right, and not lose ourselves.
But it’s the point.
Mentally challenging us to step up more as parents is fun, and it’s about our journey too.
It can be the time when previously predictable kids start acting out in ways not seen before. It can be about more verbal backchat, more questioning of rules and more boundary pushing. It definitely helps us to re-define what our rules are, and we can spend a lot of the day just answering questions, or repeating ourselves. It’s draining.
Knowing it’s coming helps a lot, and also knowing that it will pass helps too.
And ALL personalities go through some version of this ‘growth’ and these ‘changes’ and it’s NORMAL to feel a little overwhelmed, and go through days, or even weeks, where we are struggling with this, so if it’s getting too much or you aren’t enjoying the changes get in touch and I can walk you through it.
Even with moments of growth and change you can still ABSOLUTELY be the parent that you want to be.
